GWU Symposium Explores Exchanges with Cuba

New Novel Formed from Public Diplomat’s Life Experiences

31 January 2015. Retired foreign service officer Bruce Byers reached into his past to create a new novel, The Extraordinary Journey of Harry Forth, published by AuthorHouse in November 2014. The book tells of a fictional American teenager whose life is changed by a student exchange experience in Germany in the summer of 1960 that draws from Byers’ own life and career in public diplomacy.

Russia Cancels FLEX Youth Exchange Program

5 October 2014. Russia canceled its participation in an American high-school exchange program after a teenage Russian boy in Michigan sought political asylum claiming fear of persecution at home for being gay. The Future Leaders Exchange or FLEX program that sponsored the child’s visit is funded by State Department, and administered by American Councils for International Education.
