Help Requested to Learn More About Late USIA Officer

Graduation ceremony

8 October 2014. The American Foreign Service Association (AFSA) Scholarship Director is seeking to contact current and former public diplomacy colleagues of USIA officer Linda Fitzgerald, who died in December 2013. AFSA plans to name a scholarship after Ms. Fitzgerald, and would like to learn more about her.

AFSA’s Scholarship Program offers academic and art merit awards along with need-based financial aid scholarships to children of Foreign Service employees (active duty and retirees). The program bestows nearly $250,000 to approximately 80 students a year.

A former USIA employee from the 1970’s, Linda K. Fitzgerald of Hamilton, Ohio left a sizable portion of her estate to the AFSA Scholarship Program.  AFSA says she has few family members, who apparently know little about her Foreign Service career.  The organization does know Ms. Fitzgerald served in Helsinki, Finland in 1974, and her obituary says her first post was in Tehran, Iran and last post was Paris, France.

AFSA would like to learn more about Ms. Fitzgerald and her Foreign Service career, as well as obtain a picture of her.  The fund expects to establish a large ongoing, perpetual scholarship in her name and would like to share biographical information with  future AFSA scholarship recipients. AFSA plans to announce this new scholarship in the next few months and hopes to include quotes from former colleagues in the announcement.

Former colleagues of Ms. Fitzgerald are asked to contact Lori Dec, AFSA’s Scholarship Director: dec [at] afsa [dot] org or 202-944-5504.
